New duo with Scandinavian giants who crush the boundaries between folk, punk and jazz
At first sight the two musicians come from very different backgrounds. Saxophonist Mats Gustafsson infused Scandinavian jazz with a hefty dose of punk. Accordion player Kimmo Pohjonen came to the fore as a one-man-orchestra combining folk, classical and electronic music. However, an obvious similarity between the two is their awe-inspiring improvisational style. In 2024 they premiered their duo at the festival Druga Godba in Ljubljana. Now they will perform on the occasion of their first duo album «Two Balls Are Enough»
What connects Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson to Finnish accordion player Kimmo Pohjonen is passion, for music, saunas, ice hockey and art, but above all for collaborating with other adventurous musicians. For Gustafsson, the concert will be a debut at Moods, whilst Pohjonen returns for a 3rd time over the last 20 years.
And what connects the two musicians to Zurich? A meeting at a conference between our booker Yunus Durrer and the booker Bogdan Benigar, who had initially connected the two musicians for a concert in Ljubljana and proposed a concert in Zurich. In true rock and roll fashion, the duo, accompanied by Bogdan, will drive their way through Europe, stopping only to perform concerts.
